de Young Open https://www.jacksonarts.net/blog/2020/9/de-young-open I am pleased to announce that one of my photographs has been accepted into the de Young Open. The theme of the exhibit is "On The Edge". This exhibit represented a rare 'open call' for artists to submit work. Open calls have occurred only three times before in the museum's 125 year history. Painters, photographers, sculptors, print makers, fiber artists and videographers living in the SF Bay Area could submit work. I consider myself very fortunate to have my artwork, "Dreams 37" accepted, as 92% of the exhibit's 11,518 entries were not accepted.

When the exhibit will appear is uncertain due to most San Francisco public buildings currently being closed due to Covid-19. Prior to a physical opening, the exhibit may be available on the de Young's website. I will let you know when the exhibit becomes available.

I invite you to an art exhibit reception at Pacific Art League, Friday August 3rd from 5:30 to 8pm. 668 Ramona Street, Palo Alto CA.

Two exhibits are on display that evening! In the Main gallery is the “Human Form” exhibit with over 40 photography, painting and sculpture artists participating. In the Central gallery is a solo exhibit of my “Human Form: reinterpreted” photographic prints. This is a great paring of two exhibits and I am pleased my work is a part of it.

My “Human Form; reinterpreted” images, printed on 20” X 20” sheets of metal, portray the human form in a minimalistic abstract manner. They were first introduced to the public in a solo exhibit at the Paolo Mejia Fine Art and Design gallery in Oakland earlier this year. Warning: a few of the prints are anatomically correct and could offend someone.

If you can attend, free parking is available in the parking garage under city hall (directly across the street from the gallery). Street parking is also free but available parking spaces tend to be more limited.

On Saturday November 12th from 2 to 4pm you are invited to an art exhibit reception at the Peninsula Ballet Theatre 1880 S. Grant St San Mateo where Lance Huntley and I will display our photographic images of a Peninsula Ballet Theatre Nutcracker dress rehearsal. No charge for admission, dress is casual and wine, other beverages and light snacks will be available at no charge. There will also be an opportunity during the reception to sit in on a current Nutcracker rehearsal! Exhibited art will be for sale.

SF SantaCon 2015 https://www.jacksonarts.net/blog/2015/12/sf-santacon-2015 On Saturday December 12th 2015, I photographed  SF SantaCon.  A funfilled event, on behalf of everfest.com.

When San Francisco gave birth to SantaCon (Santarchy) in 1994, the mass of Santa-clad revelers represented a satirical jab at the commercialism of Christmas. Since then, the festival has grown into an international event, with Santas-only pub crawls taking place in 350 different cities worldwide.

On that Saturday, SantaCon took over Union Square in San Francisco to celebrate its 21st birthday with another year of holiday mayhem. All the suited up Santas at this year’s event were encouraged to bring a new toy to donate to kids in need.

More photos of this event can be found in the "SF SantaCon 2015" gallery on jacksonarts.net and at everfest.com.

I am pleased to share that one of my images won first place in Black & White magazine's 2015 international competition, Portrait category. The image, Chaos vs. Reason, along with a brief narrative will appear in Black & White's October 2016 issue. The image was shot at Carnaval, in San Francisco's Mission District in May of this year. A wonderful yearly event, lots of movement, music and color. Although I sometimes shoot the event in color, I usually choose black and white to portray subsets of this grand event.

Cuba Exhibit: Shadows and Illuminations - San Francisco https://www.jacksonarts.net/blog/2013/10/cuba-exhibit-shadows-and-illuminations

I am pleased to share that three of my Cuba images will be in a juried group photography exhibit to be held at Calumet's gallery in San Francisco. The exhibit is titled: "Cuba: Shadows and Illuminations". The exhibit begins on November 8 and ends on December 6, 2013. The reception will be held on Saturday November 9th, 4 to 7pm and I invite you and your friends to attend. This will be your opportunity to "visit Havana" through the lenses of several photographers who have each visited Cuba over the past few years and have brought back images unique to their own way of seeing. Calumet, a large photography store with an upstairs gallery, is located at 2001 Bryant Street, San Francisco, between 18th and 19th streets.

I also invite you to reserve Saturday December 7, 2013 from 5 to 8pm, when a reception will be held for a solo show I will be having at Caffe Union, 1830 Union Street, San Francisco. The title of that exhibit is: TIMBER. The exhibit will be at Caffe Union for the month of December.

On my website, www.jacksonarts.net, you can see many of my Cuba and TIMBER images, some of which have been selected to be in the above exhibits.

I hope you will be able to attend one or both of these receptions.

Best Regards,
Bill Jackson

Body Art https://www.jacksonarts.net/blog/2013/9/body-art untitled 17untitled 17

Much of my photography is devoted to creating images that acknowledge and celebrate individuals and groups living on or near the fringes of society. A part of this is finding beauty where mainstream society generally does not.  It was in this spirit that I recently brought my camera to a gathering of individuals committed to creating and wearing body art (a lot of it) applied with the use of ink and needles.

The images that came out of this visit, plus two others captured in a different shoot, can be found on my website www.jacksonarts.net in the gallery titled Body Art.  I invite you to visit the gallery and if you do, I'm interested in any thoughts you may have about it.

TIMBER Abstracts at Philz in Palo Alto https://www.jacksonarts.net/blog/2013/9/timber-abstracts-at-philz-in-palo-alto

I am pleased to share that eight of my TIMBER series abstracts are currently on display at Philz Coffee 3191 Middlefield Road (Midtown) in Palo Alto, California and will be on display there through October.  In December, this exhibit will move to San Francisco as a collaborative presentation by Paolo Mejia Art Gallery and Caffe Union.

The photographic images in the TIMBER series are of cut and fallen trees from California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, modified in post-processing to create something different from the original.

Although much of my photography is about creating something different from what I see through the lens of my camera, this exhibit represents a departure from my usual subjects which are people. I enjoyed creating these images, I invite you to view them.

If you are not able to see the images in person, they, along with my other work, can be viewed on my website: www.jacksonarts.net.

Any feedback you are interested in providing will be appreciated.

Best Regards,
Bill Jackson

Transience and Imperfection in a New Gallery - Mannequins 1 https://www.jacksonarts.net/blog/2013/8/transience-and-imperfection-in-a-new-gallery---mannequins-1 I recently created a new gallery, Mannequins 1, on my website and I invite you to visit it.  The subject of the gallery, a mannequin I found in a junk yard, represents, at least in part, the Japanese Wabi-sabi world view...by being beautifully imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. My intent and challenge in creating this gallery, was to tell a story, perhaps multiple stories, with images drawing on this mannequin's innate Wabi-sabiness.  Let me know if you think I succeeded in doing this.

Pacific Art League Exhibit "Figures & Faces" August 2013 https://www.jacksonarts.net/blog/2013/7/pacific-art-league-exhibit-figures-faces-august-2013 I am pleased to have one of my images, "Texting While Driving", included in Pacific Art League's juried August 2013 exhibit. This image is in the Social Commentary gallery on my website: www.jacksonarts.net. The exhibit reception is Friday August 2nd 5:30 to 8:00pm 227 Forest Avenue Palo Alto, CA and I invite you to attend.  The picture was taken in my garage.  My wife traced my image on the garage floor and I drove our replica 1957 Porsche Speedster partially over the chalk drawing.  Thereby creating a message many of us can benefit from.

Gorillas - no mist https://www.jacksonarts.net/blog/2013/4/gorillas---no-mist Togetherness

This photo, "Togetherness", along with two other gorillas at play images, are included in a recently published book by the Palo Alto Art Center titled "Double Take: Taken Personally".

It was a fun shoot.  I borrowed three gorilla suits from one of my sons and then convinced my wife, stepdaughter and soon to be stepson-in-law to put them on. I then asked them to act like an urban gorilla family on holiday.  I then happily clicked away with the camera.

Four of the images from the shoot are included in a new gallery, "Gorillas - no mist", on my website www.jacksonarts.net

Sustainable SV Summit - 2013 https://www.jacksonarts.net/blog/2013/3/sustainable-sv-summit---2013

I just learned I have two images accepted into “Sustainable Silicon Valley’s (SSV) Annual Summit 2013”.   I was fortunate to have an image in last year’s Summit (which was also used for the cover of the agency’s brochure).  SSV is a wonderful organization that is leading Silicon Valley to a more sustainable future through collaboration with local government agencies, businesses, and community organizations to identify and address high priority environmental issues.  They do this by engaging prominent Valley organizations to proactively work toward self-imposed goals of reducing regional CO2 emissions and water use – and helping them translate those goals into measurable results.  The Summit is an event that is well attended by business leaders from and beyond Silicon Valley.  Bill

Havana images soon to be exhibited at Avenue 25 gallery in San Mateo https://www.jacksonarts.net/blog/2013/2/havana-images-soon-to-be-exhibited-at-avenue-25-gallery-in-san-mateo

I am pleased to say that a large part of the “Americans in Havana” photography exhibit that recently closed at Stanford is re-opening February 23rd at Avenue 25 Gallery, 32 W 25th Avenue in San Mateo, California.

Avenue 25 Gallery is open Monday through Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm.  The exhibit’s reception will be Saturday February 23rd 1:00 to 4:00pm.  Parking, by the way, is much better in San Mateo than it was at Stanford!

I have six framed images in the Avenue 25 exhibit.  If you attended the Stanford exhibit, three of these you haven’t seen before.

I hope to see you at the reception on the 23rd, or, if not then, I hope you will be able to see the exhibit before it closes on March 29th.

Store Window Mannequins https://www.jacksonarts.net/blog/2013/1/store-window-mannequins Recently I've been photographing mannequins in store windows.  I like the unpredictability of the results as the amount and direction of reflected light can make a big difference in what is captured by the camera.  The results can be interesting, certainly to me, when I try to determine the amount of the street scene behind me I want reflected onto the glass and, as a result, overlaid onto and around the mannequin.  Almost like when shooting film and forgetting to advance the film...two pictures in one.  Sometimes I try to photograph store window mannequins avoiding all reflections, as if I were not shooting through glass.  Some of these too can be interesting, but, in my opinion, not as interesting as the added complexity one gets with reflected overlays.

Mannequins are the Featured gallery this month, because they are what I'm currently photographing and I like their look.

Warrior https://www.jacksonarts.net/blog/2013/1/warrior WarriorWarrior

Here is a gentleman I came across at this year's Carnaval parade in San Francisco's Mission District.  He was very intense in both look and motion.  I thought about approaching and talking with him, but he seemed to be on a mission, so I left him alone.  I named this image "Warrior" as he had that look.  I wish I had taken more pictures of him as he was very photogenic.  Accordingly, he is the lead image in the gallery "Portraits".  I gave this gallery a heavily vignetted, gritty look, as this treatment seemed to fit the images in this gallery best.
